To make sure that the reforms in Liuzhou are basically benefiting the local people, Liuzhou’s mayor, Xiao Wensun, paid a visit to local hospitals on July 14, to see for himself the results of medical care reforms.

Xiao spoke with personnel from different hospitals and departments about reform details as part of the study, and saw some success in statistics that showed nearly 99 percent of the people signed up for basic medical insurance by the end of June, a 13-percent increase over the 2009 figure. Liuzhou has raised the medical insurance subsidy from 80 yuan ($13) in 2009 to 320 yuan.

Xiao reiterated that the Liuzhou government needs to continue the medical reforms step by step, with checks on hospital systems and resource reallocation as parts of the reforms. Liuzhou government encourages greater enthusiasm from hospital employees and a higher level of medical care.
