Palestinian president meets UN chief on Gaza crisis

BEIJING, July 21 (Xinhuanet) -- Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has met with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon for talks in Qatar on the Gaza crisis.

Abbas said the situation in Gaza is unbearable. He called on the international quartet of mediators in the Middle East peace process - namely, the UN, EU, US and Russia - to carry out its responsiblity to protect civilians. Ban reiterated the importance of a cease-fire between the two sides.

Meanwhile, a Palestinian chief negotiator said the Israeli siege that’s been imposed in Gaza for seven years must be lifted. He also urged regional players to put their differences aside and stop the Palestinian bloodshed.
