NEW DELHI, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- India Monday canceled the scheduled foreign-secretary level talks with Pakistan later this month, apparently due to Pakistan High Commission's invitation of Kashmiri separatist to consult on the talks.

Indian Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh Monday told Pakistan High Commissioner here that her talks with Pakistan counterpart on Aug. 25 in Islamabad has been canceled, said Press Trust of India.

Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit last week invited some Kashmiri separatists to consult on the talks with Pakistan in Islamabad scheduled on Aug. 25, despite opposition by the Indian side.

Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said the scheduled talks have been called off as "no useful purpose will be served" by Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh' s visit to Islamabad.

Indian and Pakistani troops have also been exchanging fires at the Line-of-Control in Kashmir over the past few days.

During his trip to Indian-controlled Kashmir earlier this month, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi accused Pakistan of waging " proxy war" in Kashmir, an accusation rejected by Islamabad.
