Xi’an students gets gold prize at national competition

Three students from the High-Tech Industrial Development Zone in Shaanxi province won the gold prize and the Gao Shiqi Special Prize at the 29th National Youth Science and Technology Innovation Competition, which was held from Aug 21 to 25.

Through the four steps of scientific quality assessment, technical ability test, enclosed debate and public demonstration, the project which was designed by Yang Qianxi, Li Yicheng and Zhu Siyan from Xi’an High-Tech No. 1 Middle School, won the gold prize. “It’s Shaanxi’s best achievement in the last five years and it signifies No.1 school has made a breakthrough in the competition,” the their teacher Zhao Ying said.

The competition, co-sponsored by the China Association for Science and Technology, the Ministry of Education and five other ministries and commissions, includes technology innovation competitions for youths and teachers. This year, it attracted more than 450 students from 31 provinces, cities and autonomous regions in China, and 60 national representatives from 13 foreign countries including India, Norway and Sweden. There are also more than 200 teachers took part in the competition.

Gao Shiqi (1905-1988), who has a doctorate in bacteriology, is a scientist, science writer and doctor. He used to study in the US and was infected by encephalitis viruses which paralyzed him. Then, he devoted himself to writing and creating many books including Expose the Lilliput’s Secrets, The Origin of Life and Fight against Infectious Diseases. To memorialize Gao’s contribution to science, the Gao Shiqi Special Prize was founded in 1999 to encourage young people to make innovations.
