Shaanxi may become imported meat products port

A delegation from the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, visited the Xi’an International Trade and Logistics Park in the city of Xi’an, Shaanxi province, on Oct 10, to investigate whether the park is suitable to be a designated port for imported meat products, Shaanxi Daily reported.

The administration’s vice director Bi Kexin said that they will support Shaanxi’s application and give out a statement as soon as possible. He also hoped the Shaanxi Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau of the Xi’an municipal government would work with the park to undertake pilot work, preparing for the application.

In 2013, Shaanxi enterprises imported 5,000 tons of imported meat products, yet the market demand is around 40,000 tons. Since there is no designated port, rather than importing from foreign countries directly, Shaanxi enterprises have to import meat products from coastal ports or nearby provinces, which increases costs and market regulation difficulties. The designated port would reduce transportation costs by 15 percent, and people could buy imported meat products at lower prices.
