The city of Baiyin, Gansu province has turned its attention to hand-knitting this year and asked its women’s federation to hold training programs for local women from poor families, which have now reached at least 800 women, so it is setting its sights higher and getting 10,000 involved in hand-knitting and out of poverty by 2018.
The women’s federation of Jingtai county, near Baiyin, got 200,000 yuan ($32,600) in Gansu government funds for building a knitting center, which has improved women’s skills and promoted knit products, while also building good relations with other federations in more developed parts of China to expand the knitting market.
