'Thirty Years of Age', black-and-white woodcut, 120x80cm

CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- According to the official website of the China Artists Association on Tuesday, the black-and-white woodcut, 'Thirty Years of Age', created by Peng Wei (an associate professor from Southwest University), won the Creation Gold Award of the 12th National Art Works Exhibition, China Arts Award (top award in Chinese arts circle). This is Chongqing's first national gold award in painting since becoming a municipality.

Peng Wei's studio is located at the School of Arts, Southwest University, with an area of less than 20 square metres. Peng Wei was born in Sichuan Nanchong in 1980, and is now an associate professor in Southwest University.

The ‘Thirty Years of Age' presented a 'post-80s' young man. The picture was very clear, even the hair and skin texture.

The woodcut style was originated from Britain in 18th century. The artists must carve on the cross section of a board, requiring very fine skills. It is as complicated as China's embroidery. 'Thirty Years of Age' is a combination of Chinese and Western elements by using wood engraving techniques.

An expert commented that 'Thirty Years of Age' is another masterpiece created by a Chongqing print artist, after Luo Zhongli's oil painting, 'Father'. (Translated by Wang Yueyue, Fathom Language Limited)
