Shaanxi looking to special port status for meat business

2015-01-04 11:14:25

The Xi’an International Trade and Logistics Park, in the city of Xi’an, Shaanxi province, recently received port designation from the central government, which allows it to handle meat imports, which in turn cuts transportation costs and brings its people imported meat at lower prices.

The park began applying for the status at the beginning of this past year, which was followed by a visit by Wu Haiqing, vice-head of China’s General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, on July 17, where he encouraged the park to do some pilot work first, with grain imports. Then, on Oct 10, another quality inspection team paid the park a second visit to see whether they fit the port qualifications for meat imports.

Last year, the province imported 5,000 tons of meat products, while market demand was around 40,000 tons. But, without a the correct port status, local enterprises had to import their meat from coastal ports or nearby designated provinces, rather than import from foreign countries directly, which drove up costs and caused market difficulties. So, this new designation will increase the amount of meat available to the province and speed up work on the new Silk Road as a freight supplier.
