Painters without a brush in Yunnan

Five artists from Yunnan have made an active exploration into different painting materials and forms of artistic presentation. Perhaps not the most conventional use of painting materials, the artists have good use of natural resources including sand, felt and flowers – opting to ditch the ordinary brush and paper.

The art of painting on a woolen felt material was created by Wang Qing, an artist from Yanjin in Southwest China's Yunnan province. Wang Qing uses an electronic soldering iron to paint on the woolen felt, where delicate strokes are applied to produce varying shades. Drawing pictures on the special felt requires artists to have a steady hand as well as a good perception of temperature and pressure.

Glass carving is an art that requires artists to have a high degree of professionalism in both drawing and carving. Yunnan local artist, Pan Wenhui, can transform ordinary glasses into art stunning artwares, thanks to his mastering techniques. According to Pan, glass carving art is a creation that stems from traditional Chinese painting. For instance, the glass carving art has employed the drawing techniques similar to that of traditional Chinese painting.

Gemstone paintings might not auction for more than a vintage Van Gough painting, but in terms of raw materials, they are probably the most valuable paintings in the world. And when it comes to color, few people think of using gemstones to fill their paintings. But for Zhao Guodian, who was born in a family jewelry business, it was the shining gemstones that he thought were much more beautiful than traditional paint pigments. In the process of gemstone painting creation, each gem particle is carefully sorted by its color and line. After that, gemstones are permanently encased into the painting.

Another special form of artwork using natural materials is stone paintings. Here, stones are cut into different shapes and pasted into paintings. At present, the Shilin stone painting has obtained the national invention patent.

Preserved flower painting is an integral part of Yunnan's flower culture and creates art with Yunnan's different seasonal flowers. "This art keeps the most beautiful moment of the flower and is a continuing of the flower's life," said Li Yonglin, a detain flower painter. According to Li, it takes about 20 days to process the fresh flower before the artistic creation.
