Blizzards cause heavy losses in Sichuan

CHENGDU, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- Blizzards have swept across Sichuan's Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in southwest China, causing direct economic losses of around 80 million yuan (12.2 million U.S. dollars).

In Ganzi, as of noon of Thursday, 57 towns and villages had reported damage due to the current cold front, according to the Ganzi Disaster Prevention and Relief Administration.

About 1,000 mu (67 hectares) of crops and 3,600 mu of fruit orchards have been damaged, and 400 green houses have also born the brunt of the heavy snow, according to the administration.

Traffic was also disrupted, with multiple sections of the G318 national highway subject to traffic control measures. There have been power cuts in Ganzi and Ya'an City, with more than 120,000 residents experiencing blackouts. Power has been restored in most areas, according to the administration.

Local meteorological bureau forecast slight snow and rain in the south of Ganzi on Friday, while the rest of the prefecture will see clear weather.
