Italian sculptor celebrated with retrospective in Milan

MILAN, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- An exhibition that tells story and career of Arnaldo Pomodoro, sculptor and goldsmith appreciated in Italy and abroad, opened Wednesday in Milan.

The exhibition brings together about 30 sculptures created after 1955, that represent the most important stages in research and work of Arnaldo Pomodoro.

Arnaldo Pomodoro is known especially for his iconic bronze spheres. His sculpture "Sphere Within Sphere" has been seen in various dimensions in many location worldwide, including the UN headquarters in New York.

Arnaldo Pomodoro was born in 1926 in Morciano, Italy. After he moved to Milan, in 1954, he met Lucio Fontana, Enrico Baj, Sergio Dangelo and other artists crucial for his education and career.

His work was first exhibited, along with the one of his brother Gio', in Florence and Milan.

He later became a member of the Continuity Group, dedicated to abstract research in the area that lies between an interest in physical matter and a commitment to graphic sign.

The Large Sphere sculpture (3.50 meters diameter), exhibited on the roof of the Italian Pavilion at the 1967 Montreal Expo, marks the passage to large-scale sculpture.
