CHONGQING(CQNEWS)--In a beautiful lakeside village, there was a girl, the heroine of the play, dreaming of a life on the stage with honors and love. The famous drama The Seagull, by Russian writer Chekhov, depicts the story of three pairs of boys and girls struggling between love, morality, ideals and reality in a country estate in the 19th century.

Recently, the drama was performed by seniors from Meishi Film Academy of Chongqing University as their graduation work, which won four awards: “Excellent Play”, “Excellent Directing”, “Excellent Stage Design” and “Excellent Performers’ at the 2nd Chongqing Youth Theatre Festival.

He spent all his rubles to buy the hats of that time in the drama

This Chongqing University-version of The Seagull is the graduation work of Acting Class 2, Grade 2013 of the academy with the participation of 14 students.

The drama was directed by Zhao Hu, a teacher from the Department of Acting at the academy. Zhao went to St. Petersburg National Theatre Academy for his master’s degree in acting. The drama was retranslated and adapted according to the viewing habits of modern audience on the basis of Chekhov’s famous play.

Many efforts were made in creating the setting of the stage. According to Zhao, the reeds flying at the back of the stage were collected by the students on Gele Mountain and the platform for fishing was set up with sawed logs to present real texture.

The classical European hats worn by performers are even more particular. Zhao said with a smile, “I came to an antique shop when I went to Russia for academic exchange in October 2016, and the hats on sale there were exactly the hats worn by figures of the age in the drama. So I spent all the rubles I had on me and bought as many hats as possible and took them back to Chongqing.” (Translated by Tang Zhiqiang, Fathom Language Limited)
