Wenjiang to revitalize flower industry through innovation

2017-02-08 09:56:19

Authorities in Wenjiang district of Chengdu city have rolled out measures in the hope of rejuvenating its flower and tree industry, according to officials from the local parks department.

A famous “Town of Flowers” in the country, Wenjiang’s flower industry has struggled with production overcapacity due to a dwindling domestic market in recent years, Hu Yingchun, director of the district’s gardening bureau, told China Flower and Gardening News.

Faced with the challenge of further advancing the industry, Wenjiang will increase exports of flowers by encouraging flower companies to cultivate species in accordance with the needs of overseas markets.

A 2-square-kilometer “Western Garden City” complex is being planned for the next five years, with functions including gardening exhibitions, trade, technology and R&D. It is estimated that around 300 companies will set up there during the first three years.

Wenjiang will also integrate the flower and tree industry with tourism, sprucing up a number of resorts and landscapes with all kinds of flowers and trees grown from 200,000 mu (13,333 hectares) of land.

Last but not least, e-commerce and modern technology will play a bigger role in flower and tree sales, as Hu revealed that residents will be able to access information about flowers and even make purchases using QR codes on billboards in every corner of Chengdu city.
