Authorities in Chengdu’s Wengjiang district have released new policies encouraging local flower and tree enterprises to innovate and export.

Known as a famous Chinese “Town of Flowers”, Wenjiang’s flower industry has struggled with overproduction due to a dwindling domestic market in recent years, according to Hu Yingchun, director of the district’s gardening bureau.

To encourage local enterprises to sell their products in foreign markets, Wenjiang authorities have released incentive measures. Wenjiang authorities will now subsidize local enterprises to attend exhibitions in foreign countries.

Wenjiang authorities have also launched policies to encourage planters to construct their own flower sightseeing leisure areas.

“In 2016, we made great efforts in promoting and upgrading our plant business, and started new services, such as pottery making, to attract more visitors to our leisure area,” said Wang Guanlin, general manager of HuaHua Shijie Ecological Farm. “With the new support policies, we will invest more this year to improve our sightseeing area”, Wang added.

According to Wenjiang authorities, a 2-square-kilometer “Western Garden City” complex is being planned for construction over the next five years. The complex will serve the functions of gardening exhibitions, trade, technology and R&D. It is estimated that around 300 companies will set up there within the first three years.

Wenjiang will also integrate the flower and tree industry with the tourism industry, sprucing up a number of resorts and landscapes with all kinds of new fauna grown from 200,000 mu (13,333 hectares) of land.
