CHONGQING(CQNEWS)--Do you know how the nine major districts in Chongqing got their names? Let’s have a see together!

Chongqing

In the 11th century B.C., King Wu of Zhou assigned people surnamed “Ji” to Ba and they took Jiangzhou (Chongqing 重庆) as the capital. Jiangzhou was changed to Yuzhou and Gongzhou later and was a strategic town for the dynasties. In the Song Dynasties, Zhao Dun was appointed the King of Gongzhou and when he succeeded to the throne, he called that “double celebration 双重喜庆” and changed Gongzhou as Chongqing (double celebration) in 1189.

Yu

Chongqing was called Jiangzhou, and was also known as Bajun, Chuzhou, Yuzhou and Gongzhou later. In the Northern and Southern Dynasties, it was changed from Baju to Chuzhou. In 581 A.D., the Emperor Wen of Sui changed Chuzhou into Yuzhou and Chongqing was called “Yu” for short.
