Origins of Chongqing's place name

2017-03-03 09:43:03

CHONGQING(CQNEWS)--More than 2,000 years ago, Chongqing belonged to the Ba prefecture of Qin Dynasty. Why was it renamed “Chongqing” later?

One theory is that the Ba prefecture was located between Shunqing (currently: Nanchong, Sichuan) and Shaoqing (now Pengshui, Chongqing). Therefore, it was renamed as Chongqing (double qing).

The other saying is “double happy” which is accepted by most people. In the sixteenth year of North Song Dynasty (1189), Zhao Jiezhong was made King in January (lunar calendar) and the Emperor in February. Based on these two happy things, Gongzhou (current: Chongqing) was renamed as Chongqing. This name has been used for more than 800 years.

Chongqing has a long history and many used names, such as Ba, Jiangzhou, Yu and Gongzhou. Chongqing is a happy and likesome name.

Apart from Chongqing’s names, the names of places in Chongqing also have interesting stories.

Guanyinqiao

It is recorded that, at the end of Qing Dynasty, there were a temple named “Guanyin Temple” and two slab bridges at the center of Jiangbei District (current Guanyinqiao).

The Guanyinqiao, nowadays, is a key and prosperous business district.

Yudong

There was a rock by the Yangtze River. At the bottom of the rock, a hole was formed due to water erosion. Many fishe preferred to stay in the hole, thus, it is called a “yudong”. On the right, a river named “Jiantanhe” (also called as Yipinhe) flowed into the Yangtze River. The joining point is called “xikou”. Therefore, Yudong is also called Yudongxi.

Shuangbei

During Qing Dynasty, to construct a walkway near Zhanjiaxi, someone made a purse and set up two monuments for the donors. Thus, the road is called Shuangbei Street.
