Libyan parliament slams terror attacks on oil ports

2017-03-08 09:38:37

TRIPOLI, March 7 (Xinhua) -- Libyan eastern-based parliament spokesman said on Tuesday that parliament held a session on Tuesday to discuss the current clashes between the army and militias.

Abdullah Belheg said that the parliament condemned the "terrorist attack on the oil ports," demanding the international community to "take a stand against this attack and support to the Libyan army."

The members of the parliament agreed to suspend the participation in the political dialogue to protest against the attack.

Heavy fighting erupted on Friday between an armed militia called Benghazi Defense Brigades and the Libyan army in two oil ports in eastern Libya controlled by the armed forces.

The air forces have been launching attacks on the militia since the beginning of the attack on Friday.

Libya is plagued by insecurity and political division since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi's regime in 2011. The oil sector, the country's main source of income, has been suffering due to attacks and fighting between rival militias in oil fields and ports.
