NEW DELHI, March 16 (Xinhua) -- India's ruling Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) has formed a local government in India's northeastern state of Manipur, officials said.

The local BJP leader N Biren Singh was sworn-in Wednesday as the state's new chief minister.

"Governor Najma Heptulla administered the oath of office and secrecy to Singh at Raj Bhavan (governor's office) in Imphal," a local government official said.

The recent elections in the state presented a fractured verdict, with no political party gaining a clear majority. Congress has emerged as a leading party with 28 seats ahead BJP having won 21 in the 60-member lawmaking house.

However, BJP managed to form the government with the support of lawmakers from other parties.

On Tuesday, Manohar Parrikar was sworn in as the chief minister of the western state of Goa. The former defense minister relinquished his position to return to his home state. In Goa BJP also managed to form the government with the support of others.

Parrikar will face floor test on Thursday on the instructions of India's top court after opposition Congress party filed a petition challenging Parrikar's move to govern the state.

BJP's landslide victory in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand has emboldened the party and strengthened its position in the country's political arena. With these victories the BJP now rules in more than a dozen of India's 29 states.
