CHONGQING(CQNEWS)--From March 12 to 16, 2017 National Taekwondo Championships is being held at the Laiwu Complex Gymnasium in Shandong Province. On the third day of the competition, Zhou Meiling, a contestant from the Chongqing team, won the women’s 57kg championship.
More than 600 players from 43 representative teams nationwide are attracted to participate in the competition. During the five days, contestants compete in 16 groups. The Chongqing team has sent 12 players this time.
The World Taekwondo Federation issued new taekwondo competition rules in January, so they are adopted in the Championships. Chongqing Taekwondo Team’s Chief Coach Zhou Hongjun told the reporter that the new rules require very high physical ability of athletes and also improve the appreciation of the competition.
In the women’s 57kg competition held on Tuesday, Chongqing contestant Zhou Meiling defeated strong opponents from Fujian, Hunan, Zhejiang, etc. and won the championship for women’s 57kg after defeating Shao Fenfen, a famous athlete from Anhui in the final at 14:8. It is the first gold medal in the women’s championships in the history of Chongqing. Zhou Hongjun said that after this competition was over, Zhou Meiling would prepare for the qualification contest for the National Games to get an even better result.
