Oil city Karamay beckons Southeast Asian tourists

2017-04-11 09:47:03

Karamay, the well-known Chinese oil city in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, is luring tourists from Southeast Asian countries, especially Malaysia , through promotional campaigns.

Malaysian enterprises have descended on the Northwest Chinese city several times for the Xinjiang International Tourist Commodities Fair since its debut in 2012. Similar customs and eating habits draw the country close to the oil city.

A promotional delegation made up of government officials and company representatives was dispatched to Malaysia in late March.

During the 8-day visit, the delegates participated in the travel event, the MATTA Fair, from March 17 to 19 in Kuala Lumpur. A promotional meeting was held to promote the excellent travel opportunities in Karamay and across Xinjiang.

With combined efforts, Malaysia is on the guest list for the 2017 Xinjiang International Tourist Commodities Fair to be held in August, and the two sides are proceeding with direct flights between Kuala Lumpur and Karamay.

A partnership in food is also on Karamay’s radar after the signing of a contract on edible oil with Malaysian companies and the exporting of specialties such raisins and red jujubes.

“The exchanges give us an unprecedented opportunity to achieve cooperation between governments and companies, and to no longer be confined to travel agencies,” said Huang Rui, an official of Karamay’s municipal tourism bureau.
