Innovative catheters bring vigor to Wenjiang

2017-05-02 10:10:16

A group of young talents is making strenuous efforts to fulfil their dreams of becoming entrepreneurs through projects at the Medical Innovation Center in Chengdu Medical City.

The medical innovation center in Chengdu’s Wenjiang district was launched in 2016 to promote the integration of research and development (R&D) in the medical science, medical treatment and pharmacy industries.

One of those talents, Wu Dimeng, has embarked on a new journey of industrialization from mere R&D by settling up Dexin’an Innovative Medical Technology Ltd, which was registered last year, at the innovation center.

Wu received his doctorate in polymer science and engineering from Sichuan University in 2012, and started up his own business two years later. Situated in a building at Chengdu Medical City, the company is well equipped with an office, a laboratory and a good manufacturing practice (GMP) workshop.

The company has specialized recently in developing and making new coatings for urinary and cardiovascular catheters that are widely applied in interventional medicine.

Interventional medicine relies on the puncture and catheter technique for disease diagnosis and treatment. Blessed with positioning accuracy, less trauma, fewer complications and high efficacy, it has become the third-largest clinical and surgical treatment.

By adding new coatings to the plastic tubes, the tubes will be unprecedentedly smooth, facilitating the operation, and increasing anticoagulation and antibacterial effects, Wu said.

“However, the lubrication puts adhesion at risk, which means the coatings are easily worn away due to friction,” he said. “Fortunately, we found a biological adhesive which secures both bonding capacity and lubricating results.”

The company has submitted the results of their independent R&D to a higher authority for approval, and clinical trials are planned for later this year.

Wu and his team will continue their work with biological materials, cracking such difficult problems as cartilage repair, which is known for its high cost and technical difficulty.

Wenjiang district offers the companies a real boon in preferential policies. Besides, the park gathers together outstanding members of the medical industry, creating a favorable atmosphere for R&D.
