Citizens are attracted by the earliest adze in the Old Stone Age in Chongqing.

CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- The other day, Dadukou Museum was opened for citizens for free. You may see over 200 cultural relics, including the earliest adze from the Old Stone Age in Chongqing, China’s third largest pottery coffin in the Eastern Han Dynasty and a willow leaf-like bronze sword from the Warring States Period.

Treasure of the Museum: an adze

Located at 302 Ganghua Road, Dadukou Museum covers an area of 2,099m2. Archaeological studies show that Dadukou is the residence place of the earliest Chongqing citizens in the major city as well as the source of the ancient civilization therein. Human beings have been living and multiplying there since the Old Stone Age, and a splendid prehistoric culture was created. This can be proven by the treasure of the Museum – the adze from the Old Stone Age.

This short and stout adze, which is forged on both sides, has an A-shape nose and two oblique edges. It was excavated from Mawangchang Relics at Yuejin Sub-district in 1987. According to Li Guohong, the Curator of the Museum, this adze is about 19.8cm long, 12.74cm wide and 5.8cm thick and was made around 0.7-1 million years ago for cutting, smashing and excavating. As the earliest adze found in the major city, it is a symbol for production and life of ancient human beings therein.
