TRIPOLI, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- Libya's eastern-based army said on Thursday that the army prosecutor is starting an investigation into an army officer who is accused by the International Criminal Court (ICC) of committing a war crime.

"We here by inform you that the defendant Maj. Mahmoud Mustafa Al-Werfali has been arrested and investigated by the military prosecutor as per the General Commander of Libyan Arab Armed Forces Marshal Hiftar's order," Spokesman Ahmad Al-Mismari said in a statement.

On Aug. 15, ICC issued an arrest warrant against Al-Werfali, a commander of the army led by Gen. Khalifa Haftar, for illegally executing prisoners.

"Libyan Arab Armed Forces disown these actions. These actions only represent the committers which will be subject to law and deterrent penalties," the statement said.

The army will cooperate with ICC "by sharing the trial proceedings," it added.
