Exploration: where are the body and eyes of the “God of Sun” Apollo?

Entering the exhibition hall, you can see a bronze sculpture. That’s one of the most valuable items of the exhibition: Apollo’s head in the Roman imperial times. The head statue was discovered in the water of the Gulf of Salerno in December 1930.

The size of the head sculpture indicates that it must belong to a large statue. Experts analyze that when a building by the sea collapsed, the bronze statue fell in water as well. However, the body of the statue has not yet been discovered.

Statue of Zeus in the Roman imperial times.

It’s puzzling why the Apollo head statue doesn’t have eyes. According to the museum staff, the eyes of similar statues in the ancient times were made of glass or crystal, which were not connected with the bronze and couldn’t be fixed, so the eyes of the Apollo head statue are missing. In addition to the Apollo head statue, the Zeus and Hera statues as well as other cultural relics on display are worth visiting.

All citizens can visit the exhibition for free during the exhibition period.

The exhibition will last to Nov. 12 and be open to the public for free. (Translated by Huang Juan, Fathom Language Limited)
