The Wenjiang district of Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province, initiated a rural tourism festival to highlight its agricultural tourism and intangible cultural heritages on Sept 9.

During the one-week event, visitors have the chance to appreciate the sea of crape myrtle flowers in Tuqiao village, Hesheng town.

The village boasts 2,800-mu (186.67 hectares) of crape myrtle flowers and more than 300 years of agricultural history. The village attracts hundreds of visitors every day through August and September.

Local delicacies recommended by the Wenjiang Agricultural Products Processing Association will be served to visitors during the festival, including crunchy candies, handmade mooncakes and honey products.

The week will highlight the intangible cultural heritages of Chengdu. People can watch puppetry shows and local operas, experience painting with sugar and make dough figurines.

Hesheng town plans to make the festival an annual event for local rural tourism. Tang Jingming, top official of the town, said, "We will continue to host the tourism festival in the following years to increase rural incomes."
