Yunnan province's capital of Kunming, always known as a "spring city" for its vast expanse of varied fauna and flora, is expected to be a new high land for producing smart robots, as manufacturing of the first of a new generation of the high-tech devices started in the city on Oct 16.

Established at the city's Chenggong Information Industry Park, the production line is considered an important foundation for filling the gap in the high-end and smart manufacturing industry in Southwest China.

Each of the robots, or Cruzr, which are under production is 1.2 meters tall and equipped with a 13-mega pixel cameras, microphone, speaker and a 29-centimeter touch screen. With flexible arms and a smart sensing system, they can talk, dance and shake hands with people.

Developed by UBtech, a Shenzhen-based high-tech company specialized in innovating, producing and marketing robots around the world, Cruzr is targeted for commercial use.

In April this year, a strategic cooperation agreement was signed between the Kunming government and UBtech, to develop the city into an entrepreneurship base for manufacturing robots.

Upon completion of production, the city will take advantage of Cruzr in some public areas to improve working efficiency and the degree of public satisfaction.

"Kunming is advantageous in geography and investment conditions, and this will help extend our business to South and Southeast Asia," said Deng Peng, a co-founder of UBtech.

At present, UBtech's Kunming facility has two warehouses and five production lines, covering all the processes of manufacturing, from assembly to shipment. It is expected that the facility will produce 30,000 robots a year.
