Landscape painter Tao Lengyue’s exhibit at Three Gorges Museum

CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- The “Landscape with Moon – Tao Lengyue Painting and Photography Exhibition” was opened at the fourth floor of the Chongqing China Three Gorges Museum on October 31st. Sixty paintings of Tao Lengyue, 28 sets of autographs of friends like Cai Yuanpei, Huang Binhong and Xu Beihong, letters and couplets and 30 sets of photos taken by Tao Lengyue in Chongqing and three gorges area are being exhibited.

The exhibition is jointly organized by the Three Gorges Museum, Shanghai Museum, Shanghai Research Institute of Culture and History and Suzhou Museum. It is divided into four parts: “Tao Lengyue and his time”, “Tao Lengyue and Chongqing”, “Tao Lengyue and his paintings” and “Tao Lengyue and his friends”, showing the images, artistic achievement and commitment of a professional painter. The exhibits are from Shanghai Museum, Suzhou Museum, Long Museum and Three Gorges Museum and the private collections of Tao’s families.

Tao was an active painter in the early 20th century and Cai Yuanpei, who was his torchbearer, made Tao stand out in his early 30s and became a representative of the painter combining Chinese and western painting in 1920s helped Tao by giving advice and deciding the prices of paintings.

Tao learned traditional Chinese painting in his early years, and then learned western painting. He became famous in art circle beginning in the 1920s by painting moonlight landscapes integrating Chinese and western painting features. His works were called the “New China Painting” by Mr. Cai Yuanpei and the media. The works of such style are exhibited in this exhibition.

According to the Three Gorges Museum, meeting with Chongqing and Three Georges was an important point in Tao’s artistic career.

In the autumn of 1932, being well-known by his “New China Painting”, Tao went to Chongqing with paintbrush and camera. In the several months working in Chongqing, he produced many paintings and many landscape photos when touring the city and surrounding places like Jinfo Mountain. So, in addition to paintings, his photographic works are being exhibited as well.
