Former Residence of Lao She 老舍旧居

The Beibei Jinlu Shangdu Plaza, surrounded by high-rise buildings, is always crowded with people. However, at one corner of the plaza, the former residence of Lao She is quiet and secluded, with surrounding leaves of banana and bamboo blowing with breeze.

The residence was purchased by Lin Yutang in 1940 and then given to “All-China’s Writers Association for Anti-Japanese War”. Lao She finished many of his novels in this house. Since there were many mice and they sometimes dragged the manuscripts, Lao She also called it “Mice House”.
