CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- On November 2nd, the construction of Shancheng Lane, one of the 28 traditional feature areas of Chongqing, was officially started.

Shancheng Lane, formally called Tiandeng Lane, is located in the Liangtingzi Community, Nanjimen Sub-district, Yuzhong District. In the period of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, many military officers lived there. It was one of the high-end residential districts in old Chongqing. After Chongqing was opened to foreign traders, French missionaries built a church and school there in 1902 and erected lights for passersby. Because of the lights, it was called Tiandeng (sky lantern) Lane. After the founding of new China, it was changed into Shancheng Lane in 1972. The lane was built by relying on a mountain and facing the Yangtze River. Typical historical buildings like Benevolence Hall, Houlu, Changle Yongkang Stone Gate and Yilu Stone Gate, Tixingtang No. 42 were in the area. It is also the location of the home of Guo Moruo, who created many works there during the Anti-Japanese War period.

With a rich history and unique architectural styles and landforms, Shancheng Lane has always been a memorable place for Chongqing people and a destination for tourists. In recent years, after considering multiple opinions and building schedules, Yuzhong District finally determined the construction design of the lane.

The total investment of the project is about 12 million yuan. It will cover an area of 2.47 hectares, with floorage of 21,000m2. It is expected to be completed and opened at the end of 2019. Based on the principles of protection and renovation, the project will focus on showing the unique charm of Chongqing. The footpath, cliff, river view and old street are the key four points to allow tourists to learn the special beautiful view of Shancheng Lane.
