2017-12-06 09:14:42

GENEVA, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- The eighth round of intra-Syrian talks on Tuesday resumed here in Geneva after a weekend break, with UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura meeting the Syrian opposition delegation for a bilateral talk Wednesday afternoon.

Alessandra Vellucci, director of the UN Information Service in Geneva, told reporters that the delegation of the Syrian Government had been invited back to Geneva, and the UN special envoy "stood ready to engage with them" when they returned.

The new round of the UN-led Syrian peace talks, started on Nov. 28, has been scheduled to be held here in Geneva till Dec. 15.

De Mistura said earlier that the biggest obstacle for the ongoing talks is "trust".

During the weekend break the Syrian government delegation returned home for discussions and the UN envoy said earlier that he expected the government delegation to return to Geneva around Dec. 5 to resume discussions.

However, until Tuesday night the government delegation has not shown up in Geneva yet.
