Attractions in Lichuan

People may be more impressed by the summer resort of Lichuan, but Lichuan also boasts different beautiful scenery in winter.

Sumadang 苏马荡

Sumadang is located beside Moudao, Lichuan City. “Sumadang” means “the place where tiger drinks water” in Tujia language. It is at an elevation of 1,500 meters and has enchanting scenery. If it snows, the mountains and trees become white and Sumadang becomes a world covered by snow.

Tenglong Cave 腾龙洞

The famous scenic area Tenglong Cave is only 6 kilometers away from the Lichuan urban area. As a karst cave with the world’s largest total volume, it was once named “China’s Most Beautiful Place” by Chinese National Geography. Dashuijing Scenic Area was built between the 26th Year of Daoguang Emperor and the Guangxu Emperor of the Qing Dynasty, boasting two fine ancient architectural complexes “Li Family Ancestral Temple” and “Li Family Manor”.

Yumuzhai 鱼木寨

Yumuzhai covers an area of 6 square kilometers, where more than 500 Tujia households live. It features an old Tujia castle, impregnable pass, ancient tomb, plank road alongside cliffs and vernacular dwellings. It is the best-preserved Tujia village in China. In the scenic area, the bulwark and ancient road are well preserved. The stone carvings of tens of ancient tombs are exquisite and the mountain pass and dangerous road are soul-stirring. The production and living tools of villagers are simple and traditional and the folk customs there have distinctive features. It is honored as “the land of idyllic beauty”.

Lichuan Lantern Song 利川灯歌

In addition to the scenery, tourists can also enjoy the beautiful song. In 2010, the “Lichuan Lantern Song” of Lichuan City, Hubei Province was on the 3rd batch of national intangible cultural heritage list as a traditional music item. (Translated by Huang Juan, Fathom Language Limited)
