First int'l specialty coffee expo to open in SW China

KUNMING, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- The first International Specialty Coffee Expo will open in southwest China's Yunnan Province on Jan. 29.

The expo will be held in Pu'er City. Participants from more than 20 countries, including the Philippines, Japan, Switzerland and Turkey will attend.

The expo hall, covering an area of 10,000 square meters, will contain 500 booths. The three-day activity will include a trade fair, a specialty forum, cultural activities and coffee planting bases inspection and research in Pu'er.

The expo aims to support Chinese coffee brands and promote the development of coffee industry in China, and to increase income of coffee farmers and push forward targeted poverty alleviation, said Zhao Jian, deputy director of the industry promotion center of the Ministry of Commerce.

Yunnan accounts for over 90 percent of China's coffee production. Both coffee planting area and the output of coffee in Pu'er City account for 40 percent of the whole planting area and the whole output of the country.

Eighty percent of Pu'er coffee are exported to more than 30 countries and regions across the world.
