CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- The Qijiang National Geopark — Chongqing’s first National Geopark with a theme of ancient fossils – is opening on April 28.

The Geopark consists of three scenic areas: Gujian Mountain, Laoying Mountain and Cuiing Mountain. It is a main source of ancient creature fossils as well as rare fossil wood scenery, dinosaur footprints, fossil groups scenery and Danxia landform.

Being in the geopark is as if we are back to Cretaceous period all the way though the Jurassic. Laoying Mountain is the core scenic area of Qijiang National Park. It is at Sanjiao Town, Qijiang, with a planned area of 52.1km2. In nine rock formations, 656 footprints of ancient vertebrates have been discovered; moreover, it has the largest ancient bird footprint, the most perfectly preserved Hadrosaur footprint in China. It also has many Pterosaur footprints and other precious legacies. It is a rare site in and out of China for its numerous formation sites, abundant fossils, dense distribution, and overall preservation. Cuiping Mountain is located at the East New City of Qijiang, with an area of 1.26km2. In the area is distributed a great number of wood fossils dated 0.15 billion years ago. The longest wooden fossil is 28.9m in length and 1.1 meters in diameter, extremely uncommon. Aside from that, Qijiang National Geopark has the typical fossils of Qijiang Dinosaur and Qijiang Beidu Fish. Their rarity is of high value in scientific research and general science.

Qijiang National Geopark is mainly of Danxia landform; the scenery is among the most beautiful in the world. Up to now, some 10km winding trails for walking and a number of resting facilities have been built, as well as rich scientific activities and amusement events have been held. On the opening day of April 28, an event of hiking the Laoying Mountain and discovering the ancient fossil treasures will be held. (Translated by Yang Lifu, Fathom Language Limited)
