Head to Danzishi Old Street for a taste of Chongqing’s port-open culture

2018-05-16 09:47:48

Reproduce the scene of Nan’an District during the port-open period

After more than a year of repair work, the French Navy Barracks on Nanbin Road will open its doors again on June 1. It is reported that on June 1 when it opens, the first appearance to the public will be the rear part of the Barracks, and it will be presented to the public for free to display the port-open culture.

In addition, the second phase of Danzishi Old Street will be reconstructed from the original Wang Family Courtyard and the Memorial Arch, demonstrating Chongqing’s 100-year history of port-opening.

The Wang Family Courtyard was built in the 1820s. It is known as a famous house in the south of the Yangtze River in Chongqing, and the “first house to the western waterway gateway”. It is a geographical sign of the history of Chongqing's port-opening. It will become the largest quadrangle in the Old Street with double theaters built inside and outside, and it will perform normal artistic performance for free to the public. The stage will not only have historical transmission of theatrical performances, but also modern art drama performances, etc., bringing an unprecedented cultural feast to the public.

The Old Street Architecture of Chinese and western style

Travelling in the Street, “one Street, two Ports, four Courtyards and ten Scenes” is embedded like jade jewelry. “One Street” is the Danzishi Old Street; “Two ports” are the Xiajiang River and Shangbu Port; “Four Yards” are the Wang Family Courtyard, the Sun Family Courtyard, the Xia Family Courtyard, and the Qingyang Mansion; the “Ten Scenes” are the Haiguan Stone, Yingyue Pond, Qingyun Bridge, Huachao Gate, Yuyin Pavillion, Lichuan Steamship, Tushan Kiln, Love Wall, Yide Hall and 100-Year Square. “Ten sceneries ten li” is a great commentary on the unique landscape of the Street. From the Haiguan Stone to the 100-year Square, both local residents and foreign tourists can see what they know and appreciate the authentic Chongqing style.

The old street architecture incorporates elements of both China and the West. There are both green and red brick building facades with a strong Republican style, European-style arc-shaped arches and street lamps, as well as a sense of history and international standards. Here you can see the collision of culture between the Old Street and fashion and really feel the blend of Chinese and Western architecture.

In addition to the Wang Family Courtyard, another feature of the Old Street is the restoration of the 100-year Christian Church "Yide Hall" (now known as "Enjia Hall"). The church will be run by the Chongqing Christian Association and will host a wide range of church activities as well as weddings.

Reproduce the old Chongqing on hillsides

The beauty of the city's urban construction is in its ups and downs. You can "watch the river and look at the city behind" at Danzishi Old Street. Facing to the front, it is a unique landscape where the Yangtze River and the Jialing River meet. Looking back, you can see the sights along the 80-meter-high step. The city's business distributed close to one another, and Chongqing's iconic “hillsides” look is in front of you.

The entire old street spreads upwards, with a height difference of nearly 80 meters. At the same time, the design of the Old Street has retreated several times, namely the streets retreat as the height increase, which is highly characteristic of streets in Chongqing.
