CHANGSHA, May 17 (Xinhua) -- Forestry staff in central China's Hunan Province have spotted a group of endangered ducks during a recent observation.
Six of the Baer's pochard, a type of diving duck, were spotted nesting in a nature reserve at Dongting Lake, China's second-largest freshwater lake.
The playful ducks were found hunting for food in reeds, and forestry staff in Yiyang City said they were likely ready to breed.
The species breeds in northeast Asia and migrates south for winter. The migration usually starts in mid-October.
Earlier this year, 49 Baer's pochard were spotted over Dongting Lake. The species is listed as "critically endangered" by the International
Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The number of the ducks stands around 1,000 in the world.
