Tokyo stocks open higher on yen's softer tone, Nasdaq's rise
TOKYO, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened higher Thursday as the yen's retreat against the U.S. dollar lifted exporter issues, while the U.S. Nasdaq index closing higher overnight added to a positive market mood.
As of 9:15 a.m. local time, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 52.85 points, or 0.24 percent, from Wednesday to 22,415.40.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 2.11 points, or 0.12 percent, at 1,700.48.
Oil and coal product, electric power and gas, and pulp and paper-linked issues led those that gained the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
