Overseas visitors to Ireland in July up 12.5 pct
DUBLIN, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- The number of overseas visitors to Ireland reached over 1.16 million in July, up 12.5 percent year-on-year, said Central Statistics Office (CSO) of Ireland on Wednesday.
Britain was the largest country in terms of its number of visitors to Ireland in July, said the CSO, adding that over 350,000 British residents visited the country last month, up 3.4 percent year-on-year.
In July, significant increases were recorded in the numbers of visitors from the United States and Canada as well as from other European countries, it said.
Last month, close to 300,000 residents from the United States and Canada visited Ireland, up nearly 25 percent over a year ago while the number of visitors from European countries other than Britain stood at over 420,000, representing a year-on-year increase of 12.5 percent, said the CSO.
The number of visitors from other areas of the world also witnessed a double-digit increase in July, it said, adding that the number of such visitors to the country stood at over 85,000 last month,up 16.1 percent over a year ago.
During the first seven months of this year, over six million overseas residents visited Ireland, up 7.8 percent compared with the same period last year, it said.
Last year a total of 9.93 million overseas residents visited Ireland, generating nearly 6.5 billion euros (7.6 billion U.S. dollars) in earnings for the country, according to the CSO.
