HONG KONG, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, which will officially start operation on Wednesday, is the world's longest sea bridge with the Hong Kong Port and the Hong Kong Link Road forming the Hong Kong section.

The 55 km-long bridge links China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), Zhuhai City of Guangdong Province and Macao SAR. It is the first large scale infrastructure project jointly developed by Guangdong Province, Hong Kong SAR, and Macao SAR under the principle of "one country, two systems."

The Hong Kong port is located on the artificial island of about 150 hectares (including about 130 hectares for Hong Kong Boundary Crossing Facilities) reclaimed from the open waters off the northeast of the Hong Kong International Airport.

The Hong Kong Boundary Crossing Facilities will provide clearance facilities for passengers and vehicles for entering or leaving Hong Kong via the bridge. It will also serve as a strategic transportation hub on the west of Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong Link Road comprises 9.4 km long viaducts, 1 km long Scenic Hill Tunnel, and 1.6 km long at-grade roads along the east coast of the Hong Kong International Airport.

Same as the main bridge, the Hong Kong Link Road adopts right-hand traffic arrangement, while the Hong Kong SAR drives on the left.

Under a collaboration system of the three places, all kinds of cross-boundary vehicles like coaches, buses, taxis, private cars can ride on the Hong Kong Link Road after the opening of the bridge.

Meanwhile, maintenance and emergency rescue vehicles from the mainland can also be deployed on the Hong Kong Link Road for proper maintenance of the bridge and speedy handling of accidents or other emergency situations.
