CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- Not far from the Huacun Bus Stop in Yuzhong District, people rest sitting on a 20-meter bench. The bench is crowdfunded by porters, or bang-bang, with their own money.
“There is nowhere to take a break near the bus stop, so I thought maybe we should build a bench”, said Tang Heping, a porter. The bench is initially proposed to help them with their job.
Two year ago, in response to Tang’s request, some sixty or seventy bang-bang near a construction site at Huacun made small donation of 5 or 10 yuan, and finally a total of six or seven hundred was collected. They then started to look for building materials, and in a day, the bench was completed. Long Yungang, also a bang-bang said that porters nearby are highly supportive of the project. “It is a donation so small that with it you can only buy a bowl of Chongqing noodle. The elderly nearby and passers-by often take a rest on the bench, so it seems that we’ve done something right.”
There is a long staircase that leads to an underground roundabout at the Huacun Bus Stop. To get to the market, one must go across the roundabout and up and down the long staircase. “It is difficult to walk up the stairway, so a bench built here is such a relief for us,” said Ms. Wang, who lives at Linjiang Jiayuan. She takes a break on the bench every time she finishes her shopping at the market.
People used to go down the stairway to find a place to sit in the roundabout prior to building the bench, said Ms. Li. “It’s difficult for the elderly to walk up and down the stairway.” For the past year, she has spent every morning chatting with her friends sitting on the bench. They no longer need to go down the roundabout, and the bench is also a convenience when waiting for bus.
Not long ago, the porters received an Alibaba Positive Energy Award for their effort in the crowdfunded bench. (Translated by Yang Lifu, Fathom Language Limited)
