CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- The 5G technology has arrived! The first consecutively covered trial zone of 5G technology in Chongqing has been set up at Liangjiang New Area by China Mobile Chongqing, ahead of other carriers. The trial zone built by the carrier covers an area of 2.4 square kilometers with a sideline of 2 kilometers.

Reporter experience the remote control of vehicles

In the automobile, the carrier used for its 5G technology road test, the connection speed of 5G is maintained at over 10Gbps, 100 times that of the 4G network, as the vehicle goes forward.

And upon presenting driver’s license, the reporter was allowed by the instructor to drive the vehicle via the 5G remote control, right in the office building of China Mobile Chongqing. Images of the surroundings of the vehicle as well as its dashboard are displayed on 5 giant screens in real-time via the 5G network. “If we zoom in the camera, we can even see pebbles on the road,” said a staff member. Enabling a remote driver to clearly see all directions of the remote-controlled car, far away at the airport, is just one aspect of the high-level security offered by 5G remote driving. Due to the significantly low latency of the 5G network, remote drivers could hardly tell the difference from driving a real car when they operate the automobile remotely.

Fire trucks could be the first to try

In the future, this technology can be used in hazardous areas and harsh environments, such as unmanned areas, mining areas, garbage transportation areas, to greatly improve operational efficiency and save manpower. Fire trucks are expected to be the first users of 5G remote driving.

And going forward, the technology of remote driving can be integrated with self-driving to achieve manual intervention of the vehicles based on road conditions, in an attempt to improve driving safety and reduce road traffic congestion effectively.

Apart from that, the 5G technology is mainly used in areas based on smart connectivity like Internet of Things, Connected Cars, Industrial Internet and Cloud Robotics. For example, a 5G-based robotic arm can be used in a robotic surgery.

Try out the technology for free in CBDs

To help people try out the 5G technology, China Mobile Chongqing plans to showcase the 5G-based products in their flagship stores at the central business district of Jiefangbei, Jiangbei and Dadukou late this month, and whoever is interested may attend for free.

And around the middle of 2019, 5G mobile phones from various manufacturers are expected to be available for purchasing. (Translated by Yang Lifu, Fathom Language Limited)
