LONDON, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- Coastal communities around Britain were given a million pound (1.28 million U.S. dollars) boost on Monday, with government funding to help restore coastal landmarks.

Projects to receive money from the fund include seven grade II-listed Esplanade shelters in the coastal resort of Weymouth, funding to help restore two 19th century lighthouses in Whitehaven in northern England.

The Withernsea Pier Towers restoration program will help to restore 2 historic towers enabling them to become a natural focal point for the town to use in a wide range of social and community events.

Meanwhile a new foot and cycle bridge will be created along the Arnside Viaduct railway. It will form an iconic link in a long-distance coastal route from Morecambe to Barrow in one of Britain's most scenic areas.

Coastal Communities Minister Jake Berry announced the funding Monday on a visit to see how the Coastal Revival Fund will benefit the historic Withernsea Pier Towers project.

Berry said: "From Whitehaven to Weymouth, we're saving some of the nation's most cherished coastal heritage assets and landmarks from falling into disrepair."

He said it is part of a plan to invest around 325 million U.S. dollars in British seaside areas by 2020.
