Dutch PM had "useful dialogue" with May

2018-12-12 09:26:28

THE HAGUE, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- British Prime Minister Theresa May started her lobby trip to European leaders and EU officials on Tuesday with a working breakfast with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte in The Hague on Tuesday morning.

"There is no number 10 on the wall," Rutte joked after he received May at his official residence the Catshuis, located at Adriaan Goekooplaan 10 in The Hague. He referred to Downing Street 10, the official residence of the British prime minister.

Afterwards Rutte stated on Twitter that he had a "a useful dialogue which saw us discuss the latest Brexit developments". No further statements were made.

The meeting with Rutte was May's first in a series of talks with European leaders and EU officials to seek support for concessions on the Brexit deal. May had confirmed on Monday that Tuesday's crucial House of Commons vote on her Brexit deal would be postponed.

May feared a lack of support, especially due to the controversial backstop plan for the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, avoiding a hard border. In the hope for more support, May wants further assurances from the EU on this border plan.

Later on Tuesday May will meet with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin and with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and European Council President Donald Tusk in Brussels. The latter will chair Thursday's European Council's summit in Brussels about ,among other subjects, the Brexit. Tusk already stated that the remaining 27 European members will not renegotiate on the deal.
