Israel, U.S. successfully test Arrow-3 missile defense system

JERUSALEM, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- Israel and the United States on Tuesday carried out a successful test of the advanced anti-ballistic missile system "Arrow-3," said the Israeli Ministry of Defense.

The test was carried out at the "Palmachim" military air base in central Israel by the Administration for the Development of Weapons and Technological Infrastructure (MAFAT) at Israel's Defense Ministry, and the U.S. Missile Defense Agency.

The Arrow system is a family of anti-ballistic missiles designed by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and manufactured by the IAI and U.S. top aircraft manufacturer Boeing Company.

The first Arrow battery was declared fully operational in October 2000.

The Israeli Defense Ministry said that after the launch of the target, the Arrow radar system discovered it and transferred its data to the shooting management center, which analyzed it and carried out full planning to intercept it.

"When the planning was completed, the Arrow 3 interceptor was launched, which finished its mission with complete success," it said.

The ministry added that "the test's success presents an important milestone in Israel's operational ability to defend itself against existing and future threats."
