OTTAWA, March 19 (Xinhua) -- The Justice Committee of Canadian House of Commons said Tuesday it has ended investigation of alleged political interference in the corruption case of Quebec engineering giant SNC-Lavalin.
The announcement came two hours after the liberal-majority committee met behind closed doors although opposition MPs were fighting for former justice minister Jody Wilson-Raybould to testify before the committee for a second time for allegations that senior government officials inappropriately pressured her to allow Quebec-based engineering firm SNC-Lavalin to avoid criminal prosecution on bribery charges.
On Monday night, the Liberals published a three-page letter laying out their plan to leave investigation of the issue to the ethics commissioner.
The opposition parties accused the Liberals of shutting down the investigation into the SNC-Lavalin case.
Conservative Party leader Andrew Scheer said "this is an abuse of power. It is an affront to democracy and an attack on Parliament."
