CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- Every building, river, even a tree on the county road and facilities in an amusement can be seen clearly in a three-dimensional diorama of a city. According to Chongqing Bureau of Planning and Natural Resources, the first three-dimensional diorama which fully covers the whole city with different data sources and different scales has been built. The scenery, farmland, villages and city landscape can be fully seen from this model.

High precision - objects over 5cm above the ground can be recorded

“It’s the first diorama in China which fully covers the whole city.” Chen Liangchao, the assistant chief engineer of Chongqing Survey Institute, introduced that in the past 3 years, the institute organized members to shoot aerial images with manned and unmanned aircrafts and integrate 3D modeling. Recently, the 3D model with multi-source and multi-scale of Chongqing was officially put into service, which is the 3D model with wide range and high precision firstly developed within a province (municipality) of China.

Due to different requirements of aerial images and different shooting methods, the precision of this 3D model in some areas is much higher. For example, within the built-up areas of 1,314 square kilometers in main urban districts, the resolution ratio of diorama is 0.08m. For built-up areas of 29 exurban and suburban districts and counties, the resolution ratio of this diorama reaches 0.05m, and the highest resolution reaches 0.03m, which means that in these areas, objects located over 5cm above the ground will be recorded. A bus station, a tree and facilities in a stadium can be clearly viewed from this model.

Bright future - to be opened for people to inspect architecture internal structure

Chongqing Survey Institute organized centralized training and learning in districts and counties and will provide this 3D Geographical Information Platform with proprietary intellectual property rights for districts and counties for free. Xue Mei said that applied technology training aims to better promote urban development through these achievements.

“The final goals of these achievements are to serve city development and the people.” Xue claimed that this applied technology will be opened to the public to easily grasp situations like viewing actual situation of attractions, finding out whether house structure conforms to the description of developers before buying and knowing locale condition before travel.
