UN chief condemns terrorist attacks on churches, hotels in Sri Lanka

UNITED NATIONS, April 21 (Xinhua) -- United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Sunday expressed outrage at the terrorist attacks on churches and hotels in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday, recalling the sanctity of all places of worship.

The secretary-general said that "he hopes the perpetrators will be swiftly brought to justice."

In a statement issued by his spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, the UN chief expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the victims, the people and the Government of Sri Lanka, and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

He also commended the leadership demonstrated by the authorities and unity of the people of Sri Lanka in the wake of the attacks.

Guterres reiterated the support and solidarity of the United Nations with the people and the Government of Sri Lanka in this difficult moment for the nation.

The death toll from the multiple blasts that ripped through Sri Lanka on Sunday rose to 228 while 450 others were injured, local media quoting hospital sources said.
