BiH producers first in Balkan to produce under "without GMO" label: minister

SARAJEVO, May 21 (Xinhua) -- Bosnia and Herzegovina's (BiH's) minister of foreign trade and economic relations Mirko Sarovic noted on Tuesday here that BiH is the first country in Balkan region which has producers who manufacture under "without Genetically Modified Organisms" label.

During a press conference, Sarovic said that the country has established the rules that apply to production, control, certification and labeling of products without GMO substances, local media reported on Tuesday.

He added that the first successful examples of the "without GMO" certificate is given to local producers of eggs and oil.

Sarovic said that residents of BiH can now have the opportunity to choose between products that are clearly labeled according to the highest standards.

Sarovic pointed out that he was one of the 14 ministers who signed the joint declaration in 2015 to mark the beginning of Non-GM Danube Region Standard, which is the first regional harmonized Non-GM quality standard in South East Europe.

Director of BiH's Food Safety Agency Dzemil Hajric said that the institution wanted to offer products that will guarantee consumers, who want to consume something that is not genetically modified, to make sure that they choose properly.
