CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- With the implementation of Shanghai Domestic Waste Management Regulations on July 1, the “garbage sorting” has become popular in our social circle. As one of the 46 key cities for garbage sorting determined by the state, Chongqing will increase the household garbage sorting pilots to 358 communities at 43 streets and towns in the main urban areas in 2019. Seeking for answers like of “How to separate the garbage?”, the reporter interviewed the relevant expert from Chongqing Urban Management Bureau.

Question 1: Has Chongqing started to classify the garbage and how about the condition?

Answer: The Implementation Plan was issued in November 2017, focusing on the classification of household garbage in the main urban areas. At present, the governmental organizations have basically carried out the garbage classification system while other public institutions have been promoting it.

Question 2: How to sort the waste? Four categories or dry / wet waste?

Answer: According to the Chongqing Household Waste Classification Management Measures officially implemented in January this year, the waste can be classified into four categories: recyclable, perishable, hazardous and others. The dry and wet waste called in Shanghai refer to the other waste and perishable waste in Chongqing respectively.

Question 3: How to classify them in Chongqing?

Answer: Recyclable waste mainly includes waste paper, waste plastics, waste metals, waste packaging, waste textiles, waste electrical and electronic products, waste glass, waste paper, and paper-plastic-aluminum composite packaging.

Hazardous waste mainly includes waste batteries (nickel-cadmium batteries, mercury oxide batteries, and lead-acid batteries), waste fluorescent lamps (fluorescent lamps and energy-saving lamps), waste thermometers, waste sphygmomanometers, waste drugs and their packages, waste paints, solvents and packages, waste pesticides, disinfectants and their packages, waste film and waste photographic paper.

Perishable waste mainly includes kitchen garbage from related units like canteens, hotels and restaurants or from home, and vegetable and fruit waste, carrion, broken bones, eggshells, viscera of livestock and poultry from farm produce markets and wholesale markets.

Other waste refers to the household garbage other than those mentioned above.

Question 4: How to classify the shell and core of fruits, and hair lost due to washing and trimming? Need to separate the tape and carton of an express parking?

Answer: The perishable biomass garbage produced by fruit peel and core belongs to perishable waste, but the fruit like coconut and durian with hard and nonperishable shell shall be discarded into the can of other waste; hair belongs to other waste; the tape shall be torn down and put into the container of other waste, and the carton shall be flatten and put into container of recyclable waste.

Question 5: How many households have carried out the waste classification system in the main urban areas of Chongqing?

Answer: By the end of May, it has been carried out in 680,000 households of 1,796 communities of 39 streets and towns in the main urban areas of Chongqing. The maximum daily collection, transportation and resource-based disposal of perishable waste has reached 2,000 tons, and the proportion of waste incineration has exceeded 95%.

Question 6: Will the waste classification pilot in the main urban areas be increased this year?

Answer: The demonstration street and town of waste classification means it will develop in line with the Construction Standards for Demonstration Area on the basis of realizing the full coverage of domestic waste classification (including public institutions, relevant enterprises and residential communities within the jurisdiction). In accordance with the requirements of our government, the proportion of demonstration streets and towns in the main urban areas needs to be reached 35% this year, which means 358 communities in 43 streets and towns will be covered.
