CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- The “Excellent Graduation Works Exhibition” of Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, held yearly at Luo Zhongli Art Museum, Daxuecheng, becomes a cultural feast for art amateurs. This year, the 1089 Contemporary Art Center located at Bayi Road, Jiefangbei, firstly cooperated with Sichuan Fine Arts Institute to exhibit nearly 20 excellent graduation works. All these works are inspired by the creator’s childhood memories as well as fantastic ideas. This exhibition will last till August 25th. During this period, people can visit for free.

A wonderful white work hanging in the air, which consists of running wheel gears and windmills, made people amazed. The creator Zhang Qian introduced that this work Laputa was inspired from the floating island Laputa described in the Gulliver’s Travels and the island in the animated movie Laputa: Castle in the Sky of Miyazaki Hayao. Zhang said that the external image of the work was borrowed from the plane image in Laputa: Castle in the Sky and combined with a superposed technique of expression in paper carving art, so as to make the installation three-dimensional. Mechanized elements of the industrial style were added to the electric rotating machine, creating a semi-stereoscopic dynamic visual effect. “This is my recreation of Laputa: Castle in the Sky and my Utopian fantasy about Laputa.”

In addition, the work Misshapen Tools brings a new understanding of the word “machine” to visitors. The creator Lei Yunbing introduced that people were always obsessed with the word since it’s born. The work traced back to history through starting from the once glorious Age of Steam and Industrial Age, and imaging the existence of “machine” as the main body. Representative elements like steel, machine parts and steam were selected as materials to create a real and magic atmosphere.

Among these exhibits, you can see sculptures made of pines, bamboo battens, like a bamboo weaving work called Endless. The creator said that he endowed new connotations to traditional bamboo weaving after communicating with bamboo weaving masters. It’s worth mentioning that his understanding of the sculpture was different from masters’ traditional bamboo weaving techniques. While as the work progressed, the differences were integrated.

Marionette made of old objects, like a wooden bed and weigh beams. The creator Guo Zemiao introduced that the aim of this work was to regain abandoned and forgotten old objects and make them work again. When they were in operating state, the old times seemed to be continued. The reason why he chose used furniture was that they represented the past. (Translated by Mao Qiao, Fathom Language Limited)
