TRIPOLI, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- Italian Ambassador to Libya Giuseppe Buccino on Wednesday delivered medicines and equipment to a local hospital in the west of Libyan capital Tripoli.

"Ambassador Giuseppe Buccino visited today Janzour Hospital to deliver medicines, medical equipment and a generator in the framework of Italy's bilateral program Solidarity Bridge for the relief of Libyan population," the Italian Embassy in Libya tweeted.

The eastern-based army and the UN-backed government have been fiercely fighting since early April for control over Tripoli.

The fighting has claimed thousands of lives and injured many others, and also displaced nearly 120,000 people.
